The clue here is in the name. Management accounts are produced to allow high-ups in a business to make decisions based on the financial position of the company. These accounts are reports that detail specific data that is useful for the management’s current needs. Because of this, there are no set formats or data requirements for a management account, nor is there a set time-frame for them to be produced. In fact, you may never actually produce one.

The monthly management accounts training offers a quick overview of how a set of management accounts can be produced and what entails in its production. It is intended to give trainees a sequence of activities to follow when putting together a monthly reporting pack for their senior management team.

The sequence of activities and the importance attached to each activity can be very different, depending on the line of business that you are in. In time, you are likely to develop a more vivid and succinct picture of the production process, which you can then integrate into your own particular circumstances. Most of the information contained is from the point of view of working in both product and service-based industry.

In most organisations, the board or senior management requires the management accountant or chief accountant to produce a monthly profit and loss account/income statement. This allows the organisation to gauge its performance against set budgets (which are mostly prepared before the start of each financial year) and expected forecasts (mostly updated at each month end).

Financial forecasts aren’t just for large multinational corporations. They are valuable for any business, and are perhaps even more important for small businesses, where a healthy cash flow is essential given they don’t always have as much cash available to draw on in case of an emergency.

Our training will show you how cash flow forecast can help you;

  • Plan out how much you expect to make in sales this year
  • Plan how much you expect to spend in costs
  • Understand when cash will come into your bank account and leave it

Armed with this knowledge, you will be well placed to make important decisions about your business.

Budgeting and Forecasting

Budgeting and financial forecasting are financial planning techniques that help business personnel in the decision-making process. Budgeting uses estimation to quantify the expectation of revenues a business wants to achieve for a future period, whereas financial forecasting is used to estimate the amount of revenues that will be achieved. Budgeting essentially lays out a plan for where a business wants to go, whereas financial forecasting indicates where the business is actually headed.

Our management training team can help you use financial forecasting and take immediate action based on the forecast data. Our training will help you to ascertain how a company uses budgeting to make decisions, how budget should be updated more frequently than one fiscal year so that there is some relationship to current market circumstances.

All limited companies registered in Uganda are required to prepare financial accounts for Companies House and URA each year. These accounts are often referred to as ‘annual accounts’ or ‘statutory accounts’ and they are used to report the financial activity and performance of a business during its most recent financial year.

The financial year of a limited company is usually a 12-month period that ends on the accounting reference date (ARD), which normally falls the anniversary of company formation. Annual accounts are also used to work out how much Corporation Tax a company has to pay to URA on its taxable profits.

Types of limited company accounts

All companies, whether trading or dormant (non-trading), must prepare accounts of some kind and provide copies to their members (shareholders or guarantors) and Companies House. Trading companies must also submit accounts to URA with each Company Tax Return.

There are 5 types of annual accounts for limited companies in Uganda:

  • Micro-entity accounts
  • Small company accounts
  • Medium-sized company accounts
  • Large company accounts
  • Dormant company accounts

There are three classifications of company accounts for trading companies: small, medium and large. Within the small company classification there is a subset called micro-entity, which applies to very small companies. The size of a company is determined by various thresholds for annual turnover, balance sheet total, and average number of employees, each of which impacts the amount of accounting data required in the accounts.
